Like a phoenix rising from the ashes after 2,000 years, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina has arisen along the shores of the Mediterranean. This new Library of Alexandria sits just a stone's throw from the site of the ancient library of Alexandria. That fabled repository was burned, and its vast trove of cultural treasures lost forever, in 48 BC. The modern library offers far more than just books. It's built to hold up to 8 million volumes, and is also the site of three museums, five research institutes, six art galleries, a planetarium, and a conference center. Bibliotheca Alexandrina is participating in the creation of the World Digital Library along with UNESCO, the US Library of Congress , and other institutions.
