  • Born: 1 April 1980
  • Birthplace: Greenwich, Connecticut
  • Best Known As: Wild daughter of Mamas and Papas member John Phillips

The daughter of 1960s rock star John Phillips (of The Mamas and The Papas) and South African model Genevieve Waite, Bijou Phillips is a life-in-the-fast-lane celebrity along the lines of her pals Paris and Nicky Hilton. Surrounded by New York wealth and celebrity, her teen years were filled with modelling (for Calvin Klein), nightclub parties and drug addiction, and Bijou made a reputation for herself in the tabloids as a girl gone wild, all by the time she was 18. In 1999 she released her own confessional pop album, I'd Rather Eat Glass, and appeared in the James Toback film Black and White, earning mostly positive reviews for both. She then appeared in the films Almost Famous (2000, with Kate Hudson) and The Door in the Floor (2004, with Mimi Rogers). Since then she's appeared in Choke (2008, starring Sam Rockwell), and carved out a niche in cheap horror movies like Venom (2005), The Wizard of Gore (2007), Hostel Pt. II (2007) and It's Alive (2008).

Her half-siblings include Chynna Phillips, of the pop group Wilson Phillips, and Mackenzie Phillips, who appeared in the movie American Graffiti and the 1970s TV series One Day at a Time... Over the years Bijou has been romantically linked to Sean Lennon (son of John Lennon), Leonardo DiCaprio and Elijah Wood.

Biography

The life of the supermodel-turned-teenage-pop-star daughter of the Mamas & the Papas' John Phillips has been widely speculated upon and written about in respectable memoirs (her father's Papa John) as well as supermarket tabloids. Bijou has been characterized as "riotous," "wild," and "out of control" although she has contested such remarks by writing and recording her own "sensitive, serious" songs. Growing up in her father's tumultuous but wildly creative Southern California home, Phillips was a fan of Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones, and Phoebe Snow, the likes of which graced her family's dinner table as well as her childhood phonograph. At 15, her father taught her 12 chords on a child-sized guitar he discovered in his basement, and encouraged Phillips to work through family issues through music. Although she was a prolific child songwriter at home, her skills developed more formally at the renowned Miles Copeland songwriting workshop, where she worked with real-deal songwriters Howard Jones, Eric Bazilian, Jill Sobule, Jill Cunniff, and Belinda Carlisle. Angry, cathartic tunes about her father and mother were written and recorded for her debut album, I'd Rather Eat Glass, produced by Talking Heads and Modern Lovers guru Jerry Harrison. Drop-by pals gave Bijou all the encouragement a youngster could possibly handle, including appearances on Glass by Prairie Prince, Bernie Worrell, and Joe Gore. Phillips completed the album project while concurrently being shot for Interview and Italian Vogue covers, as well as acting in Two Girls and a Guy, Black and White, and Grace of My Heart. Yet music, claims the well-provided-for and talented Bijou, is her "true path." ~ Becky Byrkit, All Music Guide

Biography

A reformed, drug-addicted wild child-model turned actress from a notable celebrity lineage, Bijou Phillips' uninhibited club-kid childhood proved fodder for the celebrity-obsessed masses as its lurid details were documented in nearly every tabloid on the shelves. Yet despite the traps and temptations that she may have fallen victim to in her early years, Phillips has restored her existence from tabloid headlines to forge a successful career in film and music. Born in Greenwich, CT, in 1980 to Mamas & Papas founder John Phillips and actress Genevieve Waite, Bijou's early years were accelerated into overdrive when she began modeling at the age of 13. Emancipated from her parents the following year, Phillips went out on her own in New York City and although she initially resisted the lure of its cocaine-fueled nightlife after witnessing its effects on her sister and father's lives, soon began to experiment with drugs after being ostracized by the city's substance-powered movers and shakers. Though she would become the youngest model ever to appear on the cover of Vogue and once again became the center of attention for appearing in Calvin Klein's revealing and controversial ad campaign, life in the fast lane was bleeding Phillips of both her soul and vital energy. It was only a few short months later that the former champion equestrian pleaded with her father to be allowed to return home and attend rehab -- a plea that was initially denied until her father awoke to the mirror-image dangers his daughter was facing. Recovering from her accelerated youth more focused and wiser from experience, Phillips began to turn life around by focusing on her music and film career. As the animal-loving and self-proclaimed bipolar actress emerged to appear in such films as Almost Famous (2000) and renegade director Larry Clark's Bully (2001), she also began to reach into her past to find inspiration as a singer/songwriter. Utilizing the 12 chords her father had taught her on a guitar at age 15, and drawing from the harrowing experiences that nearly destroyed her in her early teens, Phillips crafted her debut album entitled I'd Rather Eat Glass. An unguarded musical eulogy to her former life, Phillips' debut as a songwriter may not have broken as much new ground as her father in his prime, though it marked a maturity and growth that hinted toward the good things to come from a reformed free spirit reclaiming her youthful vigor. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Her portrayal of Lorna Doom opposite Shane West in What We Do Is Secret, about the seminal punk band The Germs, also earned her glowing reviews.[citation needed] Other films she has done include Choke, with Angelica Huston and Sam Rockwell, and the comedy Made for Each Other, with Chris Masterson.
