Biography

A prolific composer of film and television music, Bill Conti remains most closely associated with his work on the successful Rocky films. Born April 13, 1942 in Providence, Rhode Island, he learned piano from his father, and later took up the bassoon. While studying composition at Louisiana State University, Conti also performed with the school's symphony orchestra, spending his evenings playing jazz in area clubs; he subsequently earned his Master's degree from Julliard before relocating to Italy in 1967. There he first broke into films, composing and arranging music for productions including Juliette de Sade and Candidate Per un Assassino. In 1971 Conti scored Vittorio de Sica's Oscar-winning Il Giardino dei Finzi-Contini, bringing his music to the attention of international audiences; he subsequently returned to the U.S., where he composed the soundtracks for features including 1973's Blume in Love and 1974's Harry and Tonto.

Conti shot to fame in 1976 with his score for Rocky; the soundtrack album went platinum, and the main theme, "Gonna Fly Now," topped the U.S. pop charts. Conti and star Sylvester Stallone subsequently reunited for chapters two, three and five in the Rocky series, as well as 1978's F.I.S.T. and Paradise Alley; in 1981 he scored the James Bond feature For Your Eyes Only, scoring a Top Five hit with the title track, sung by Sheena Easton. After two previous nominations, Conti won an Oscar in 1983 for his work on The Right Stuff; at about the same time he became a prolific composer of televison themes, writing music for series including Dallas, Falcon Crest, Cagney and Lacey and Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. He also served as musical director for a number of Academy Awards telecasts, winning an Emmy for his work on the 1992 ceremony. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Biography

From the mid-'70s through the '80s, soul-stirring scores for such features as Rocky, The Right Stuff, and The Big Blue earned composer Bill Conti a special place in the hearts of filmgoers worldwide. Though his output in subsequent decades may not have lived up to his early work -- and his scores were not as available on CD as those of other composers -- Conti's association with longtime collaborator John G. Avildsen, combined with frequent television work and constant output, kept the award-winning composer busy. A native of Providence, RI, Conti majored in piano and composition at Louisiana University before earning his master's degree from the Juilliard School of Music in New York. His early work included scores for such films as Juliette de Sade (1969) and Harry and Tonto (1974). In 1976, his chart-topping theme for the Sylvester Stallone breakthrough Rocky proved to be a success for Conti, as well. In addition to proving an unexpected blockbuster at the box office, the film was also the beginning of an enduring professional relationship between the composer and director Avildsen.

Although Conti's work in such features as The Right Stuff (1983, for which he took home an Oscar), The Bear (1984), North and South (1985), and Broadcast News (1987) resulted in rich success, his contributions to such Avildsen films as The Karate Kid (1984) and Lean on Me (1989) also brought out the drama. In addition to feature work, Conti remained busy scoring music for such popular TV series as Dynasty, Falcon Crest, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, and American Gladiators. If the composer's name wasn't mentioned as much during the '90s, it certainly wasn't for lack of output. His music for such films as Rookie of the Year (1993), Spy Hard (1996), and The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) were all commendable efforts. Never one to shy away from a challenge or turn down a lesser-known film, Conti ushered in the new millennium with scores for Avenging Angelo (2002) and the curiously titled boxing drama 2 Birds With 1 Stallone (2003). ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Early life and career

Bill Conti is a graduate of Louisiana State University. Bill also studied at the Juilliard School of Music. He is a past winner of the Silver Knight Award presented by the Miami Herald.

Rocky series

His big break into celebrity came in 1976, when he was hired to compose the music for a small United Artists film called Rocky. The film became a phenomenon, and Conti's training montage tune, "Gonna Fly Now" topped the Billboard singles chart in 1977. He also composed music for the sequels Rocky II (1979), Rocky III (1982), Rocky V (1990) and Rocky Balboa (2006).

Other film and television credits

Conti also worked for some other films and, eventually, for television series. In 1981, he wrote the music for the James Bond film, For Your Eyes Only, when John Barry was unwilling to return to the United Kingdom for tax reasons, and provided the score for playwright Jason Miller's film version of his Pulitzer Prize winning play That Championship Season the following year.

In 1983, he composed the score for HBO's first film, The Terry Fox Story. Conti composed music for the films Bad Boys and Mass Appeal. Then in 1984, he received an Academy Award for composing the score to 1983's The Right Stuff followed by composing music for the TV series North and South in 1985. He also composed the score for The Karate Kid as well as the Masters of the Universe live action movie. In 1999 he composed the score for The Thomas Crown Affair remake, starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo.

He also composed the themes to television's Dynasty (as well as doing the score for the three hour pilot, and episode after that), The Colbys, Falcon Crest, Cagney & Lacey, and The Lifestyles of The Rich And Famous. Conti also composed the theme song to the original version of American Gladiators, worked with CBS on the movie jingle, composed one of the early themes to Inside Edition, and wrote the theme to Primetime Live for ABC News. In addition he composed the score to the studio altered American version of Luc Besson's The Big Blue.

Awards and nominations

Bill Conti has received many award nominations for his work. He received a Best Song nomination for "Gonna Fly Now." He won an Oscar for the largely electronic score for The Right Stuff. On April 22, 2008 before a packed house at the LSU Union Theatre at Louisiana State University, Bill Conti was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
