Biography

Billy Boyd is recognizable to international audiences as The Lord of the Rings trilogy's comic and courageous hobbit Peregrin "Pippin" Took. He is also one of Scotland's most prolific theater actors, a skilled musician, and a talented singer. Since graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with a diploma in Dramatic Arts, Boyd starred in countless stage productions throughout the United Kingdom. He plays drums, bass, and guitar, and sings baritone and tenor. Boyd was discussing his latest play at Scotland's celebrated Traverse Theater, when he heard that he landed a coveted and career-changing role in The Lord of the Rings trilogy: one more great accomplishment in an already brilliant career.

Boyd was born in 1968 in Glasgow, Scotland, where he still lives today. He adored escaping to the movies as a child. After multiple viewings of George Lucas' Star Wars, Boyd reasoned that if he could not truly be a Jedi Knight, he might as well be an actor. At ten years old, he played the Artful Dodger in his school's version of Oliver Twist and was hooked. Through high school, he performed in amateur productions at the local art center and in annual Christmas shows. Yet, a cynical school guidance counselor coerced Boyd to temporarily abandon his ambition. After graduation, he became an apprentice bookbinder at a publishing house. Boyd bound books for six years, making good friends with his colleagues and spending his nights singing with a band on the Glasgow pub circuit. When he realized that he desired a change, he applied to acting school.

Boyd's audition tape marked the first time he acted in six years; nevertheless he was accepted into a selective three-year, acting-intensive diploma program at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama for the upcoming semester. In his first term, he learned to perfect his voice and movement. In his second, he performed in Shakespeare, Chekov, comedies, musicals, and even pantomimes. He earned walk-on roles on several television shows, and even a speaking part on Scotland's Taggart. Shortly before graduation, St. Andrews Repertory hired Boyd for their production of The Slab Boys, and to play the title role in The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole. He has acted steadily ever since, performing in several Shakespearean and various modern plays, including the U.K. tour of Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting. He added four BBC Radio programs to his credit, and appeared in his first mainstream film, Jason Connery's Urban Ghost Story (1998). He also displayed his singing and drumming talents in the cult musical Julie and the Cadillacs (1999), in which he played the Scottish drummer of an English band during the '60s.

In the fall of 1998, Boyd auditioned for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, New Line Cinema's massive three-film screen adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's books. After meeting with director Peter Jackson, Boyd defeated over a hundred actors for the major role of Pippin Took and flew to New Zealand for the trilogy's 18-month shoot. Pippin is as brave as he is foolish, and as stout-hearted as he is afraid. The character appears in all three films -- The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), The Return of the King (2003) -- making Boyd an instant celebrity.

After completing The Lord of the Rings, Boyd quickly rejoined the theater. Only one month before the press junkets began for the trilogy's first installment, he performed in the Traverse Theater's rock & roll production The Ballad of Crazy Paola. Besides being named as one of Scotland's most eligible males, Boyd completed a comedy screenplay with fellow hobbit Dominic Monaghan, and launched his official website. ~ Aubry Anne D'Arminio, All Movie Guide

Early life

Boyd was born in Glasgow, Scotland to William and Mary Boyd,[1] who died, a year apart, when Boyd was in his early teens.[2] He was raised, along with his older sister, Margaret, by their grandmother. In 1984, at the age of sixteen, he appeared in local musical company Theatre Guild, Glasgow's production of Hans Anderson. He worked as a book-binder for 7 years before pursuing an acting career. One of the books he bound was The Lord of the Rings. He graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he earned a diploma in Dramatic Arts.

Career

As well as being a screen actor, he also appears on the stage. He has been in several plays; most recently, San Diego and The Ballad Of Crazy Paola. He is also an accomplished musician, singing and also playing the guitar, bass, and drums. He wrote the melody for and sang in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King called The Edge of Night. [3]

He also starred as Glen, the Multiple Personality Disordered son of Chucky (Brad Dourif) and Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), in the Seed of Chucky 2004.

He topped list of top 100 Most Eligible Men in Scotland in 2002. Currently, he is the lead singer and co-songwriter in the band, Beecake.[4] He has also made a cameo appearance in the popular Scottish comedy Still Game in the second episode of the first series. In 2008, Boyd will star in Ecstasy based on the #1 best-selling book by Irvine Welsh as Woodsy. This film has now been removed from IMDb and it is uncertain if it will go ahead.

Personal life

Aside from his musical aspirations, Boyd is an avid surfer, since his time spent surfing in New Zealand during the production for Lord of the Rings.[2] He also holds a Grade 7 in foil fencing and a Phase 4 rank in both Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Kali.[5]

He currently owns a house in Glasgow with his wife, Ali McKinnon. On 26 April 2006, he and McKinnon welcomed their first child, son Jack William Boyd.[6]

Boyd has a tattoo of the Elvish word for "nine", a reference to his involvement in the Lord of the Rings and the fact that his character was one of the nine members of the Fellowship of the Ring. The other actors of "The Fellowship" (Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Sean Bean, Ian McKellen, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen, and Orlando Bloom) got the same tattoo with the exception of John Rhys-Davies whose stunt double got the tattoo instead.[7]

He remains close with Lord of the Rings co-star Dominic Monaghan and they have written a script together but at the moment there are no plans for it to be made.

Boyd is one of the patrons of Scottish Youth Theatre, Scotland's National Theatre 'for and by' young people.

Boyd is also the Patron of the National Boys Choir of Scotland.

Holidays in Scotland

In 2008, Billy fronted VisitScotland's Perfect Day Campaign, and talked particularly of his love of surfing in Scotland, particularly in Machrihanish, Pease Bay and Coldingham Bay in the Scottish Borders. In an interview about the campaign with the Scotsman newspaper on 28 July he said "I don't really do much promotional stuff but felt that with this one I could be honest...I'm very proud of where I come from and I get very excited if a friend comes over and I can show them around."[8]

Music

Billy fronts a band called Beecake. See Myspace[3]. As well as topping some of the international MySpace charts, the band was recently awarded VisitScotland's award for Best Live Act at the Tartan Clef Music Awards. The award was created by VisitScotland to celebrate Scotland's great live music scene and Glasgow's new title of UNESCO City of Music. The Tartan Clef Music Awards raise money for Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland - a charity which uses music to bring joy into the lives of children and adults who have been isolated by disability, trauma or illness[4].
