Mangifera indica L. is the what is known as the "common mango." There are 69 species belonging to the genus Mangifera but only about 27 produce edible fruit.
Due to the number of edible species, the mango goes by different names in different areas and can refer to a specific species of mango. For instance, "pahutan" is
the name of an edible mango from the Philippines which is a different species (Mangifera altissima) than the common mango.
