Polioptila nigriceps 4½″ (11 cm). Male: In breeding plumage puts on a solid black cap, lacing in winter and in females. Note the largely white undertail (largely black in Black-tailed Gnatcatcher).

Range: W. Mexico. Has bred in s. Arizona.
