[BOOL] French for "ball," referring culinarily to a round loaf of white bread. Also called miche.
A plain-sawn log which has been reassembled in the original log form, but with spacers between adjacent slabs.
In those Greek states where the government was carried out by an assembly of citizens and a council, the general Greek name for the latter was boule. This was a specially appointed body of citizens, which implemented the decisions of the sovereign assembly and administered the day-to-day running of the state. In classical Athens the boule consisted of five hundred (male) citizens over 30 years old, appointed annually by lot by the demes (acting as voting districts) of Athens and Attica, from those who were willing to stand and had survived a preliminary scrutiny. No one could serve on the boule more than twice in a lifetime. Hence a large proportion of the male population served at some time in their lives, though there is some evidence that on occasions the well-to-do were over-represented (it must therefore have been possible to interfere with the drawing of lots). Solon at the beginning of the sixth century BC was credited with the creation of the original boule at Athens, but the origin of the boule as it functioned in classical times lies in the reforms of Cleisthenes at the end of the sixth century.
The name given to the form of synthetic ruby or sapphire grown from molten drops in a furnace. The word is French for “ball” and persists from the round pea-sized shapes of the first synthetic rubies and sapphires.
