In Ancient Greece, particularly Athens, the Boule was an
assembly of citizens that were selected to run the day to day
affairs of the city-state. The members of the Boule were chosen by
lot, and their terms lasted one year. The Boule of Athens was
established by Solon in 594 B.C., with 400 members. It was expanded
to 500 members, 50 men from each of the ten tribes of Athens, by
Kleisthenes in 508 B.C.
