As far as I remember it has origins from the French during the time when Louisiana belonged to them under the House of Bourbon (a royal family). The term "bourbon" was named in specific places around the US, most notably Bourbon Street in New Orleans, although the term "bourbon whiskey" may have been derived from any of these places.
