Biography

Actor, rapper, and has-been Brian Austin Green is truly a renaissance man for our times. The son of country session drummer George Green, he was born July 15, 1973, telling Playgirl, "I'm part Scottish, but I've got a whole lot of sh*t mixed in. I'm like A-1 Sauce." Green made his TV debut at the age of 13, guest starring on syndicated series including Small Wonder (about a wisecracking child robot, much like Green himself) and Still the Beaver (about a retarded 40-year-old named Theodore Cleaver). That same year, he also appeared on Growing Pains with that girl who was always vomiting. From 1986-1989, Green co-starred on the long-running CBS prime-time sudser Knots Landing, playing the role of Brian Cunningham. Then, in 1990, his big break: He was cast as nerdlinger David Silver on the new Fox teen drama Beverly Hills 90210. Introduced as a young outsider to the circle of cool kids that included Jason Priestley's Brandon; Shannen Doherty's Brenda; and Luke Perry's mad, bad, and dangerous-to-know Dylan, Silver eventually winnowed his way into the inner sanctum by DJ-ing on the high school radio station, skipping a grade, dating Tori Spelling's Donna Martin, helping Donna Martin graduate, and looking on stupidly while his onetime best friend, Scott Scanlon, blew his brains out while playing with a handgun. David also battled drug, alcohol, and gambling problems, and got an accidental eyeful of stepsister Kelly Taylor's naked goodness. Influenced by A Tribe Called Quest, KRS-One, and no doubt Vanilla Ice, Green began rapping -- and as art must imitate life, so did David Silver. The character started kicking some hardcore gangsta sh*t that brought him to the attention of Icon Records, but evil music mogul Serge Menkin soon forced David to forsake his vision for a mawkish ballad called "Precious"; the fledgling superstar balked, and the deal went sour. Silver pursued various showbiz careers throughout 90210's ten-season run, among them club owner, music video director (helming a clip for Powerman 5000), manager for racist hatemonger grunge-wannabes Cain Was Able, music critic for the Beverly Beat, and -- most notably -- one-hit wonder as a member of the group Jasper's Law, which scored a payola-funded chart smash with the Silver-penned "Keep It Together." Meanwhile, in real life, Green began work on his Yab Yum label solo debut, produced by the Pharcyde's Tre. "People will trip, but I tell you, Brian's dope," Tre told URB magazine. Indeed, Tre, indeed. When Green dropped his debut, One Stop Carnival, in 1996, he also dropped his middle name -- sadly, some early promos mistakenly credited the disc to "Brain Green." No matter. "[The album] is kinda like dem little carnivals that come to town with the dog-faced boy -- it's just a jumble of sh*t," Green reportedly told INsider upon the album's release. "It's not like going to Disneyland where there's a theme. There's no real direction to the album." No doubt this radical lack of focus contributed mightily to The Onion naming One Stop Carnival one of the least-essential albums of the 1990s. Luckily, Green didn't quit his day job: In the 1996 TV movie Stolen Youth, he starred a young man seduced by his best friend's mother, and in 1997's Unwed Father, he played an unwed father. Beverly Hills 90210 ended production in 2000, and Green has no doubt been totally busy and stuff since. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Biography

Born in 1973, Los Angeles native Brian Austin Green is best known for his role as David Silver in the '90s pop-culture phenomenon, Beverly Hills 90210; however, Green had been appearing on the small-screen long before he made a name for himself as Donna Martin's (Tori Spelling) lucky boyfriend. By the age of 11, when he appeared in a film produced by a student of the University of Southern California, Green knew he wanted a career in the arts, and by 1989, he was well on his way to doing just that, having made appearances on Knots Landing, Baywatch, The New Leave It to Beaver, and Highway to Heaven. In 1990, the same year as the successful launch of 90210, Green could also be seen in a starring role in James Slocum's An American Summer. The actor would increase his big-screen appearances throughout the mid-'90s and go on to appear in Joey Travolta's erotic thriller The Laws of Deception in 1998, and 2002's Purgatory Flats. Before long, Green agreed to direct and star in Fish Without a Bicycle (2004), a romantic comedy for the twentysomething set. During the same period, he could be seen playing the controversial best friend of a young boxer in Cock & Bull Story. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

Early life

Green was born in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California, the son of Joyce and George Green, who was a country and western musician.[1] His middle name, "Austin," was added to differentiate himself from another actor when he joined the Screen Actor's Guild as a child.[2] Green grew up in North Hollywood, California, and attended North Hollywood High School, after attending the Hamilton High School Academy of Music.

Career

Prior to his role on Beverly Hills, 90210, Green had a recurring role for the three seasons (1987-1989) on the hit CBS prime time soap opera Knots Landing, playing the role of Brian Cunningham, the son of Abby Cunningham Ewing (Donna Mills). He reprised his role in the 1997 TV mini-series, Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac.

Producer Aaron Spelling has stated that Green was cast in the role of David Silver much because he felt that Green's own personality resembled the personality they wanted that character to have. The character was often scripted to reflect Green's own interests. As the series progressed the character began to experiment with hip hop music and being a D.J., as did Green himself.[3]

In 1996, Green dropped "Austin" from his professional name and attempted to begin a career as a rapper, releasing one album, entitled One Stop Carnival, produced by The Pharcyde member Slimkid3.[3]

Green appeared briefly in the multiple award-winning Showtime drama series Resurrection Blvd. as Luke Bonner, a police officer attending law school in 2001-2002. He appeared on the 2005 ABC sitcom Freddie, starring Freddie Prinze Jr. before the program's cancellation in May 2006.

Green appeared in a horror short called Grace, which was set around a miscarriage gone bad, and features Gilmore Girls actress Liza Weil as his love interest. The short premiered at the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors convention on June 2, 2006 and was reworked as a full-length feature film in 2009.

Green appeared in the recurring role of Derek Reese, the uncle of John Connor, in the first season of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. As critics and fans responded positively to his performance in the role,[4][5] Green became a series regular at the start of the second season.[6] His character was killed in the penultimate episode on April 3, 2009. However, in the next episode, another Derek from an alternate timeline was introduced and would have remained on the show if it had been renewed.[7]

Green guest-starred on the season 7 finale of CSI: Miami.[8] Green has also been cast in the The CW's new drama pilot Body Politic, along with Minka Kelly, Gabrielle Union, and Jason Dohring.[9] The series has not been picked up for fall 2009. Green is also co-producer for a big screen adaptation of Fathom, starring Megan Fox.[7]

Green portrayed the cyborg Metallo on the 9th season of Smallville.[10] Green will also appear in Episode 18, which is scheduled to air in the spring. [11]

On September 27, 2009, Green made a guest appearance on the television show Saturday Night Live in a skit involving girlfriend Megan Fox. In the skit Green played version of the Transformer Bumblebee in which Bumblebee is merely a man wearing a Bumblebee mask.

Personal life

Green dated Tiffani Thiessen in the early and mid-1990s. After their breakup, he met actress Vanessa Marcil, also on the set of Beverly Hills, 90210. Their son, Kassius Lijah, was born March 30, 2002. In 2004, Green began a relationship with actress Megan Fox, eventually leading to an engagement. In February 2009, Brian and Megan called off the engagement but still continued dating.[12]
