Music career
Early years
Marshall started out his music career by playing his father's drums. He states that after scratching his father's drum set a few times, that his dad decided it was time to buy him a bass guitar[1]. He cites John Paul Jones, John Entwistle, Geddy Lee, Justin Chancellor, and Doug Pinnick as major influences.
Creed (1995-2000, 2009-present)
After being recruited into the band as a full-fledged member by Scott Stapp and Mark Tremonti, Marshall came up with the name Creed, which had previously been known as Maddox Creed and, before that, Naked Toddler. He was in Creed until late 2000, when personal issues with vocalist Scott Stapp led him to depart the band, though some sources state that he was fired from the band; Marshall, however, remains silent about this issue and does not state the reasoning behind his departure. For Creed's follow-up album, Weathered, guitarist Mark Tremonti played bass. Brett Hestla, now of Dark New Day, played bass during live performances. Marshall has, however, since rejoined the band for their 2009 reunion, and appeared on Full Circle, the 2009 Creed album released on October 27, 2009. He performed with the band for the first time in 10 years on June 23, 2009 when Creed released their AOL Sessions, in which they performed four of their hits. Marshall had once said that he would never perform on stage with Scott Stapp again, but later stated after the reunion was official that he was happy to be back in Creed.
Alter Bridge (2004-present)
After leaving Creed in 2000, Marshall played for the band Head Heavy and another one called Grand Luxx until 2004, when he was asked to join Alter Bridge by Tremonti and Scott Phillips personally since they enjoyed his playing. The band also consists of former Mayfield Four vocalist Myles Kennedy. The band released two albums, One Day Remains and Blackbird, with a live DVD titled Live from Amsterdam in the works. A third Alter Bridge album is due out in 2010.
Equipment
Guitars
- Sadowsky Vintage 4 & 5-string NYC basses.
Amps & cabinets
During his Creed days, Brian used Ampeg amps and Ampeg 8x10 cabinets. He currently uses the following Mesa/Boogie equipment:
- Mesa/Boogie Big Block 750 heads (2)
- Mesa/Boogie RoadReady 8x10 cabinets (2)
These amps, in conjunction with his Sadowsky basses give Brian his characteristic sound, defined by massive low end and punchy low-mid/mid bite and articulation, as compared to the relatively thin-sounding bass tracks on Creed's first album.
Pedals
- Blackstar Distortion
