broadsheets (or broadsides), singleleaf texts of songs sold at public events such as markets and hiring fairs. The printing and sale of broadsheets was first introduced into Ireland from England and Scotland in the 17th cent. The songs dealt with a variety of subjects: love, politics, crime, carousal, and emigration. They were distributed by strolling singers. The form declined in the 20th cent.
