A species of French air, popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, characterized by tender sentiments and often by references to young brunettes. Ballard issued volumes of brunettes between 1703 and 1711, and Chambonnières and D′Angelbert used brunette melodies in some of their harpsichord pieces. The name may derive from the refrain (‘Ah, petite Brunette! Ah, tu me fais mourir’) of the once famous song, Le beau berger Tirsis.
