buffer zone

A neutral area between hostile or belligerent forces that serves to prevent conflict.

Example: In Figure a buffer zone of apartments separates an area of single-family houses from a commercial property area:

(DOD) 1. A defined area controlled by a peace operations force from which disputing or belligerent forces have been excluded. A buffer zone is formed to create an area of separation between disputing or belligerent forces and reduce the risk of renewed conflict. A conical volume centered on the laser's line of sight with its apex at the aperture of the laser, within which the beam will be contained with a high degree of certainty.
