Bug!

Games: Bug!

Game Description

Bug! brings a 3D world to the Sega Saturn. The main character, Bug, is a green bug with a cartoon look. As the story goes, Bug is an actor who has just been cast in a new action film called Bug!. The complete game is a movie that you are acting in and your success in each level will determine the movie's success. Some of the supporting actors in your movie include: Bee-52, Daddy-O-Long-Legs, Fire Ant, and the main enemy, Queen Cadavra.

Take Bug through 6 island kingdoms and 18 levels of action. Each kingdom has three levels and an end boss. Your two forms of attack are the butt bounce and zap attack. At the end of some levels new attacks can be gained such as spit.

Roots & Influences

As you may have guessed, Bug follows the adventures of a bug. The game resembles other platform games such as the Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario series.

Review: Overall

Bug! is a challenging game set in a 3D world. The main character, Bug, has a certain amount of "bug-juice" and when that's gone he's a dead bug. You lose some of the fluid when you get hit by something or someone. Of course, when the juice is gone you lose a life but when all of your lives are gone the game is not done yet. Fortunately the game contains continues. Continues, extra lives, and cans of bug-juice can be found in each level.

Although the movie theme is somewhat original the story within the movie is typical; the hero must save his friends and family from an evil mastermind. There is quite a large range of enemies keeping the game fresh throughout. At the end of each level is a sometimes difficult to defeat boss character which does not allow the game to become too easy. All characters in the game are drawn beautifully and some of them have very funny speaking parts.

Getting into gameplay, this is supposed to be a totally free 3D game. Though it feels 3D in my opinion, critics say it's not totally 3D because you can only move left, right, forward, and backward into and out of the backgrounds. So yes, it gives a 3D feeling but it is not a free roaming environment. Once you get used to this kind of movement, there is plenty of fun gameplay to be had.

Graphics and sound also add to the overall experience. Characters are colorful and of cartoon quality. When zoomed in on things are a bit blocky but that does not detract from the fun. The sounds in Bug! are of high quality. Especially enjoyable are the voices that add an extra dimension to the game. One thing did bother me a little, the voices repeat over and over again. Some more lines for each character would have been great.

Nevertheless, anyone with a sense of humor who enjoys platform games will enjoy this game.

Bug! is a video game for the Sega Saturn. Released in 1995 in North America, Japan and Europe, it was one of the earliest 3D platform games. It was later released for Windows 3.x and Windows 95 on August 31, 1996 by Beam Software, on one CD that contains both versions of the game.

Story

The background plot revolves around the title character, Bug, an actor in Hollywood hoping to make his "big break". Players take control shortly after Bug has signed a deal for the lead role in an action film in which his girlfriend is kidnapped by a black widow and must rescue her. The gameplay takes place "on the set" of each scene and cutscenes between levels show Bug moving from one set to the next.

Gameplay

Bug for sega saturn.png

Bug! was played like a traditional side-scrolling adventure title. In the same fashion as Sonic the Hedgehog, (in one level you must race Sonic) Bug jumped on the heads of his enemies to defeat them while making his way through large levels and collecting power-ups. What sets Bug! apart is the game's 3D levels, which take the side-view and tweak it. Bug can walk sidewise up vertical surfaces and even upside down. Each set of levels (ranging from a bright, green grassy area to a deep red, desert level) has a deeply individual look and feel.

Characters

Character Description
Bug (Voiced by John Frost) "Our hero is a razor-witted, irreverent mighty mite with feelers, who uses his derriere and deadly aim to trounce villans. Despite his lack of manners, Bug is convinced he can turn this role into an award-winning performance."
Bee-52 "Battle-scarred but still able, Bee-52 is on the prowl for action. This busy foe often buzzes around power-up."
Daddy-O Longlegs "Too cool, this dude is Queen Cadavra's only surviving ex. He's a jive-talking hipster whose main occupation is hanging out - and avoiding his poisonous former spouse. Collect a Coin power-up and then find Daddy-O. He'll take you to a mini bonus round."
Queen Cadavra "With her insatiable appetite for bugs, this porky prima donna is intent on devouring all the denizens of Bug Island. She's brassy, loud, egotistical and obnoxious. When she's not eating her minions, she's chewing them out!"

Powerups/Items

To change the pace of the gameplay every once in a while (in case gamers got tired of the constant jumping strategy), players could pick up two powerups to give Bug new forms of attack. One gave him an electric attack which was best used in close-quarters while another gave him a poisonous spitting attack for ranged combat. There are also blue crystals in which can help you qualify for a "Dragon Ring Chase" bonus round.

Power-Up/Item Description
Blue Crystals (Item) "These gems get you to the bonus round at the end of each world. Pick up at least 100 Blue Crystals in a round (the screen counter keeps a running total) to earn a Dragonfly Icon. Get 3 icons and you'll get to play the Dragonfly Ring Chase after clearing the level."
Bug Juice (Power-Up) "A healthy habit that restores all hit points."
1-Up (Item) "Supplies bug with an life."
Clapper Board (Item) "A valuable collectible, worth 1 additional continue."
SpitWads "Energizes your Spit Attack. Pick up one of these, then press Button B to get 'em with a glob. You'll find Spit Wads in 4 delicious flavors:
  • Green - Single-glob fire.
  • Red - Double-glob fire.
  • Blue - Rapid fire.
  • Purple - Bouncing ricochet fire.
Zap Cap (Power-Up) "Energizes your Zap Attack. After collecting this power-up, press Button A for an dlectrifying energy blast."
