Speeches delivered by members of Congress, designed for home consumption and to promote a member's chances of reelection, got the name “bunk” from Representative Felix Walker of Buncombe County, North Carolina. In 1820, Walker interrupted debate over the Missouri Compromise to make a speech directed chiefly to his constituents. Other representatives need not bother to stay to listen, he advised them, because “this is for Buncombe.”
