Biography

Canela (pronounced Kuh-NAY-luh) has been singing since she was a child and her mother toured with Diana Ross as a backup singer during most of her childhood. She was brought up by her grandmother in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley. However, her life in California came to an abrupt end when her mother married a Dutch man and they settled in Holland.

In fact, it was in Holland where Canela fully dedicated herself to her musical career. She began working as a dancer and backup singing for her mother, while also taking studio session gigs with local Dutch musicians. Canela moved back to Los Angeles in 1998 to pursue a professional singing career.

Her debut CD was released on Goodfellas Ent./DreamWorks Records and she recorded the majority of the disc with songwriter/producer Rodney Jerkins. Other collaborators on Canela include songwriter/producers Tim & Bob ("It Just Feels Right" and ("One Day"). Lil' Mo, a recording artist in her own right, oversaw "Sponsor (I Need, I Need, I Need)." Canela has a powerful voice and distinctive style that should enable her to have a successful career. ~ Paul Clifford, All Music Guide

Canela, meaning Cinnamon in Portuguese, is a town located in the Serra Gaúcha of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Both Canela and neighboring Gramado are important tourist resorts and they both draw many visitors each year. Ecotourism is very popular in the area and there are many opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding and river rafting. The main tourist attraction in Canela is the famous Parque do Caracol, the Cathedral of Stone, and the Cataract or Cascata do Parque do Caracol (Snail Falls Park). Like sister town Gramado, Canela is a large tourist draw during the winter, where snowfall can occur, and during the Christmas holiday and the local town council deck Canela with lights and other festive decorations. Canela is part of the Rota Romântica or Romantic Route, a touristic scenic bypass.
