If you are referring to the Moroni statue found on Mormon temples, that is the prophet Moroni, not captain Moroni. They are two different men with the same name, and lived about 500 years apart. The Moroni statue most often faces east, but not always.

In the Book of Mormon, there are two men named Moroni. One, Moroni son of Mormon, is definitely a prophet. The other, Captain Moroni, may have been a prophet, but might have just been a great man.
