was once the normal Scottish term for a crystal jug for serving water. Fowler classed the Victorian English use (a water-bottle with a tumbler placed over it) as a genteelism, but its 20th century meaning, an open-necked container for serving wine, is unexceptionable.

[kuh-RAF] A decorative beverage container, usually narrow-necked and fitted with a stopper. Carafes are generally made of glass and used for cold beverages.

[kuh-RAF] A simple clear glass (occasionally metal) container with a wide mouth used for serving wine or other beverages. Restaurants often use carafes to serve inexpensive wines. Carafes can also be used to decant older wines that have thrown sediment; however, finer wines are customarily transferred to a more elaborate container, such as a decanter.
