Carl August Ehrensvärd

Architecture and Landscaping: Carl August Ehrensvärd

(1745–1800)

Swedish Neo-Classical architect. His store-house at the dockyard at Karlskrona (1784) is one of the most severe late-C18 buildings. After a visit to Paestum in the 1780s (recorded in his Journey to Italy 1780, 1781, 1782 (1786)) he designed a primitivist Doric project for an entrance-gate to the dockyard that influenced Stirling in his Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart (1977–84). His architectural designs, including a pyramid and an extremely squat Doric Order, were as advanced as any at the time, and his polemical works promoted something remarkably like C20 Functionalism.
