(born May 9, 1914, Barletta, Italy — died June 14, 2005, Brescia) Italian conductor. He studied viola and composition at Santa Cecilia in Rome and, after years as a violist, became a conductor in 1944. That same year he was appointed musical director for Italian Radio. In 1950 he organized the Milan Radio Orchestra. After several years at La Scala in Milan, he left opera at the peak of his international career in 1967; he thereafter devoted his time to conducting symphony orchestras. His recordings of operas and choral works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Giuseppe Verdi were widely acclaimed, and he subsequently held important orchestral posts in Chicago (1968 – 78), Vienna (1973 – 76), and, lastly, Los Angeles (1978 – 84).

(b Burletta, 9 May 1914). Italian conductor. He conducted in Rome from 1944 and made his theatre début in 1950 with La traviata. Experience with the Milan RO led to his appointment as principal conductor at La Scala (1953). He conducted a memorable Don Carlos at Covent Garden in 1958, returning until 1967 when he decided to concentrate on orchestral engagements. With the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Chicago SO he became known for lyrical yet dynamic performances of a limited repertory. He returned to opera in 1982, with Falstaff in Los Angeles and London. He was conductor of the Los Angeles PO, 1978-84.

Biography

An acclaimed and versatile conductor, Carlo Maria Giulini started his musical studies as a violinist, attending the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. He studied conducting with Bernardino Molinari at Santa Cecilia and Alfredo Casella at Accademia Chigiana in Siena. After graduation, he joined the Augusteo Orchestra in Rome as a violist. As an orchestral musician, he came in contact with the great conductors of the time, including Strauss, Mengelberg, Walter, Klemperer, and Furtwängler. After receiving his conscription notice for military service during World War II, Giulini, an ardent anti-Fascist, decided to go into hiding. When the Allies liberated Rome in 1944 he emerged and conducted the orchestra he used to play in (now known as the Orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia) in a Brahms symphony to celebrate the liberation. This was his debut as a conductor.

He was subsequently hired as an assistant conductor for the Italian Radio Orchestra, becoming chief conductor in 1946. During his tenure as conductor of the Italian Radio (RAI) Orchestra of Rome, he attracted notice for his innovative programming which included revivals of forgotten operas by Italian Baroque composers, such as Domenico Scarlatti. His theatrical debut was at Bergamo, in Verdi's La Traviata.

In 1950, he was sent to help organize a new RAI orchestra in Milan. His broadcast reviving the nearly forgotten Haydn opera Il mondo della luna was noticed by many, including legendary conductor Arturo Toscanini and La Scala's principal conductor, Victor de Sabata. He began conducting at Milan's La Scala opera house in 1952, debuting with Manuel de Falla's La vida breve. He was engaged as an assistant conductor, succeeding De Sabata as principal conductor in 1953. Among his most notable performances was a classic Traviata with Maria Callas. Giulini added new works to the La Scala repertory, including Bartók's Bluebeard's Castle and Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea, and worked with stage directors such as Franco Zeffirelli and Luchino Visconti. Although Giulini premiered in England at Glyndebourne in Falstaff, it was his direction of Visconti's production of Don Carlos at Covent Garden that made him well-known in Britain. In 1955, he debuted in the United States with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Giulini developed a symphonic repertoire slowly, devoting much attention to each new score; thus, he did not conduct Mozart or Beethoven symphonies until he was in his fifties. He was appointed principal guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony in 1969, and was the director of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra from 1973 to 1976. He succeeded Zubin Mehta as musical director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1978, remaining at that post until 1984.

Giulini's conducting incorporates elements of Furtwängler's and Toscanini's styles. His dynamism and purity of sound are reminiscent of Toscanini, but the spacious, Romantic approach reminds one of Furtwängler. His particular attentiveness to inner voices results in a rich sound. Giulini eschews podium theatrics or autocratic attitudes. Instead, he approaches the musicians as co-workers serving the music. After his retirement from Los Angeles, Giulini continued working as a guest conductor, mostly in Paris, Chicago, Milan, Berlin, and Vienna, and eventually limiting his activities to appearances with the major orchestras of these cities. ~ Joseph Stevenson, All Music Guide

Carlo Maria Giulini (May 9, 1914 – June 14, 2005) was an Italian conductor, and violist.

Biography

Giulini was born in Barletta, Italy and studied the viola and composition at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He later studied conducting with Bernardino Molinari.[1]

Giulini worked at Milan Radio from 1946 to 1951, where he revived several obscure operas, including works by Alessandro Scarlatti. Arturo Toscanini heard a production of Haydn's Il mondo della luna; this led Toscanini to recommend Giulini for the musical directorship at La Scala, where he remained from 1953 to 1956. In 1955 he made his American debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, leading to a nearly quarter century association with the ensemble.

In 1958, Giulini conducted a highly acclaimed production of Verdi's Don Carlos at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. During the 1960s, he was in great demand as a guest conductor of leading orchestras around the world, and made numerous well-received recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London and several others.

After 1968 Giulini abandoned opera, not wanting to compromise his artistic vision, and concentrated on orchestral works. He served as principal guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony from 1969 to 1972. Giulini's last concert with the CSO was on March 18, 1978. He was named music director of the Vienna Symphony in 1973. From 1978 to 1984, he served as principal conductor and Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, launching his tenure there with performances of Beethoven's 9th Symphony. In 1982 he returned once more to opera, conducting a controversial production of Verdi's Falstaff.

Giulini's most notable opera recordings include the 1959 Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus versions of Mozart's operas Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni for EMI, as well as his 1955 recording of Verdi's La Traviata with Maria Callas. He also made recordings of Verdi's Requiem and the Four Sacred Pieces which were highly praised. Admired orchestral records include Debussy's La Mer and Nocturnes, Dvořák's 9th Symphony and Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, Brahms's 4th Symphony and Mahler's 1st and 9th Symphonies with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven's 3rd and 5th Symphonies, and Schumann's 3rd Symphony with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Brahms's four Symphonies, Bruckner's 7th, 8th and 9th symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic, and Dvořák's 7th and 9th Symphonies with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. Most of these discs were recorded for the Deutsche Grammophon label. His live recording of Britten's War Requiem made in the Royal Albert Hall in 1969 which is available as a BBC Legends recording was a Gramophone Award winner.

Giulini and wife, Marcella (d. 1995), had three children.[2] He died in Brescia, Italy at age 91. [1]
