Game Description
Carn Evil is a shoot-em-up full of heart-stopping thrills and chills. Armed with only a handgun at first, you must make your way through the Haunted House, Rickety Town and the Freak Show before reaching the Big Top. Along the way you'll encounter all sorts of ghouls, ghosts and monsters who will do anything they can to stop you in a game fully loaded with grisly 3D graphics and bloodcurdling sounds. You get only six shots before having to reload, and along the way you can uncover hidden power-ups which will give you more health and firepower. ~ Brad Cook, All Game GuideRoots & Influences
This game is the latest in a long line of shooting games which really have their roots in those old shooting galleries at the boardwalk where you used a BB gun to shoot creatures who popped in and out of a scene. Now, they pop in and out on a screen. ~ Brad Cook, All Game GuideReview: Enjoyment
The difficulty brings this down a notch... ~ Brad Cook, All Game GuideReview: Overall
Carn Evil is great, but it's also really hard. I find games like this tough to review, because they're enjoyable with their use of state-of-the-art graphics and sound, but they're so tough that you don't get much time to enjoy the experience. Perhaps designers felt that a high rate of turnover was key to Arcade owners wanting to buy this machine. As I said, the graphics are top-notch, especially the creepy intro. You get to pick which level you want to go to once that's over, and I'd have to say they're all really hard. This is a first-person shooter where you don't get to pick which way to go (as opposed to a game like Revolution X), so all you can do is stay alert and get ready to fire at the first sign of a ghoul or goblin. The monsters are tough, especially when several of them show up on the screen at the same time. The best strategy is to pick them off one by one; if you keep bouncing around, you'll find yourself partially killing one (since it takes more than one bullet to do them in) and then moving to another and then moving to another, and so on. In the meantime, the first one will get into close range and do some major damage on you. And make sure you try to shoot whatever they're tossing at you, because that stuff is just as deadly as they are.
The bummer is that you are equipped with only a handgun with six bullets and you have to shoot offscreen to reload, so you have to make sure you're accurate or you'll find yourself having to reload more often than you'd like. And when several beasties come at you at the same time, you'll find that reloading makes the game even harder. Personally, I think they should have just given you unlimited bullets, just to add a little bit to what is already a short game time. Carn Evil is already hard enough without adding more difficulty to it.
There are also hidden powerups which increase your health and firepower, but it would take a better gamer than me to uncover them. I was too busy dying to think about looking for extra stuff. ~ Brad Cook, All Game Guide
