Carrie Fernandez

Game Character: Carrie Fernandez

Character Bio

Carrie comes from a family of traveling Spanish entertainers who wielded great magic as a means of income as well as defense. The clan's most noteworthy member was Sypha Belnades, an ancestor who assisted Trevor Belmont in destroying Dracula in the 15th century. As an infant, Carrie rode along with the group in the back her family's wagon, hearing the horrid creatures of the night and seeing the bright flashes of her family's magic that protected her.

As the group continued across Europe, it stumbled upon Dracula's castle. After parking the wagon train at the entrance, a handful of family members entered. Days later only one of them emerged: Saipha. Her blood had been poisoned by Dracula's fangs as she killed the others that entered with her and returned to slaughter the rest. A single wagon escaped, with Carrie sleeping inside.

Years passed as Carrie grew up an orphan, having escaped her family's evil destiny -- at least for the time being. She was soon adopted and continued to grow. Her foster mother noticed that Carrie had a knack for simple magic, mostly of the light kind such as illuminating rooms, creating heat and other simple spells. Her mother, intrigued by the girl's skills, began researching Carrie's lineage. She found that Carrie's family had been attacked by the villagers in Spain and that several of them were burned because of their talent for powerful magic. The rest fled across Europe. The book did not tell of their encounter with Dracula, though.

As Carrie's foster mother was starting to unravel more and more, a band of demons came to the town in search of the little girl. Her mother sacrificed her own life to save Carrie, who watched her die. The little girl felt a rage within -- the rage of her family's destiny to be tormented by evil. And with these thoughts she unleashed a massive orb of light that seared the demons and sent them back to the world from which they escaped. Vowing to stop this evil curse, Carrie set a course for the castle of Vlad, Dracula's home.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES: When Castlevania for the N64 was first created, four playable characters were designed. They included Kohnel (an escaped prisoner/martial artist/werewolf), Schneider Belmont (a traditional whip wielder), Corler (a cyborg who carries the classic horror chainsaw as well as a shotgun) and Carrie Eastfield (an innocent but powerful spell-casting schoolgirl). Carrie was eventually renamed Carrie Fernandez to allow her a Spanish story and heritage. Schneider was also renamed Reinhardt Schneider to distance himself from a direct relationship to the Belmont family. Carrie is similar to the playable characters in Castlevania III. Whereas Reinhardt uses the traditional whip, she wields magic, giving the character of Carrie a familiar feel to the older Castlevania fans.
