Biography

Probably one of a very few soundtrack composers to idolize Iggy Pop, Carter Burwell is best known for his work with the Coen Brothers, having scored every one of their films through the year 2009. By turns haunting and dark or quirky and experimental, Burwell's eclectic music has graced films in a wide variety of genres, and he's used the occasional big-studio project to finance his work on a number of groundbreaking independent films. Born November 18, 1955, in New York, Burwell took piano lessons as a child and learned to play blues guitar as a teenager. He studied architecture and fine arts at Harvard, but wasn't considering music as a career; upon graduating, he first worked in a biology lab, then as an animator, while playing in punk bands by night for fun.

A mutual friend referred him to the Coen Brothers, who were seeking a composer for their debut 1984 feature, Blood Simple. They all hit it off, and Burwell was employed for the Coens' next project, the kidnapping caper Raising Arizona (1987); Burwell blended samples with a variety of thematic source materials. The Coens' 1990 gangster film, Miller's Crossing, was Burwell's first fully orchestrated work, and he attracted more attention for 1991's groundbreaking Barton Fink; he composed only 20 bars of music, which were then treated with various sound effects and reshaped throughout the film by sound designer Skip Lievsay.

Burwell's workload increased steadily as the '90s progressed, and he began taking on more mainstream film projects: Doc Hollywood (1991), Wayne's World 2 (1993), and Airheads (1994), among others. He won wide acclaim for his work on 1995's Rob Roy, which kicked off the most prolific period of his career -- over 35 films in the next five years. Among the highlights were the thriller Conspiracy Theory (1997), The Jackal (1997), Gods and Monsters (1998), the fictionalized glam rock chronicle Velvet Goldmine (1998), the bizarre Being John Malkovich (1999), and the Gulf War epic Three Kings (1999). In addition to his film-scoring activities, Burwell has also played accordion and synthesizer with eclectic new age artists like Gabrielle Roth and David Hykes' Harmonic Choir. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Biography

A film composer whose off-kilter works can frequently be heard in the efforts of both the Coen brothers and Spike Jonze, Carter Burwell has also found work on such high-profile Hollywood efforts as Rob Roy (1995) and Conspiracy Theory (1997). Though the New York City native was merely going through the motions when his parents signed him up for piano lessons as a child, his passion for music was truly ignited when a high school friend encouraged him to explore blues improvisation. Continuing on the piano while a student at Harvard, it was during a performance at a club shortly before graduation that the sound editor for an independent thriller entitled Blood Simple heard Burwell and recommended the young musician to the film's directors. A penchant for simple melodies punctuated by unusual instrument selections and an ever-evolving incorporation of various styles found Burwell scoring virtually every Coen brothers movie since Blood Simple, and an interest in a dark and comedic approach to such weighty issues of death often finds his sometimes subdued quirkiness bubbling to the surface. Burwell's signature mournful-yet-hopeful sound has lent itself well to everything from straight drama to cutting black comedy. Burwell's work on director Spike Jonze's Being John Malkovich found the composer forming a close relationship with yet another unconventional filmmaker, and Burwell subsequently scored Jonze's follow-up feature, Adaptation, as well. Awards for his contributions to Fargo, Gods and Monsters, and Before Night Falls have ensured Burwell an enduring career in both mainstream and independent film alike. For inspiration, Burwell often eschews the urban confines of New York City for the nature and serenity of Big Sur, and in 1999, the prolific composer exchanged wedding vows with wife Christine. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Life and career

Burwell was born in New York City. He graduated from King School in Stamford, Connecticut,[citation needed] and Harvard College.

As a film composer, Burwell has had a long working relationship with the Coen Brothers, providing music for every film they have made (except for O Brother, Where Art Thou?, where he simply provided additional music to a score primarily composed by T Bone Burnett). He enjoys working with left-field directors and has also scored Spike Jonze's films. Among his best known film scores are And the Band Played On (1993), Conspiracy Theory (1997), Hamlet (2000), The Spanish Prisoner (1997), Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007), In Bruges (2008) and Twilight (2008).

Burwell, like many composers, studied piano. Starting lessons when he was 7, he studied Mozart mostly, but eventually quit.

In April 2005, Burwell composed and conducted music, performed by The Parabola Ensemble, for the plays "Sawbones" written and directed by the Coen Brothers, "Hope Leaves the Theater" written and directed by Charlie Kaufman and "Anomalisa" written and directed by Francis Fregoli. This was a segment of the sound-only production Theater of the New Ear, which debuted at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, NY with support from Sirius Satellite Radio, United Talent Agency and Sony Pictures.

Burwell married Christine Sciulli in 1999.[1]

Thick Pigeon

Burwell once played in a band named Thick Pigeon with Stanton Miranda. The group released only two albums, Too Crazy Cowboys and Miranda Dali. On Burwell's soundtrack for Psycho III, Miranda was a featured singer.
