Beans belong to many genera. The common garden bean is Phaseolus vulgaris. The broad bean is Vicia faba. They are all of the legume family Fabaceae.

A black bean is a bean plant with black seeds, a dried seed of a black bean plant, a dried black seed of certain varieties of the common bean, a fermented soybean, or an Australian tree, Latin name Castanospermum australe, also known as the Moreton Bay chestnut.
