Biography

Alt metal outfit Cave In originated in 1995, in Methuen, MA, when Stephen Brodsky and Jay Frechette got the idea to start a band in the vein of some of their favorites: Failure, Unwound, Snapcase, etc. With Brodsky on guitar and Frechette's vocals, they added bassist Justin Matthes, guitarist Adam McGrath, and drummer John-Robert Conners, and recorded some early demos. Split 7"s with Gambit, Piebald, and Early Grace followed before Cave In got a chance for its own, courtesy of Hydra Head, which appeared in 1997. Matthes departed after the Hydra Head release and was replaced by Andy Kyte, but he didn't last longer than an East Coast tour. Frechette also left, making room for Dave Scrod, who didn't last either. Cave In next tapped Caleb Scofield (Strike 3), who worked out as both the bass player and singer. The early singles-comp Beyond Hypotermia appeared in 1998, followed by the proper full-length Until Your Heart Stops and the Creative Eclipses EP. Cave In issued the critically acclaimed Jupiter in 2000 before signing with RCA in 2001 and premiering with 2003's ambitious Antenna. In 2005, Cave In returned to Hydra Head for Perfect Pitch Black; a year later the band confirmed that it was going on an indefinite hiatus (but not breaking up) as its members explored other musical avenues. ~ Mario Mesquita Borges, All Music Guide

Biography

Cave In was formed by Jay Frechette and Steve Brodsky in early 1995. The initial line-up consisted of Jay Frechette on vocals, Steve Brodsky on guitar and vocals, Adam McGrath on second guitar, JR Conners on drums and Justin Matthes on bass. They would soon release a demo and a handful of split 7" releases with bands like Gambit, Piebald and Early Grace. 1997 saw Cave In's first release; a self-titled 7" on Aaron Turner's Hydra Head Records. Following that release, the band embarked on a three week East Coast tour. That tour was, however, cut a week short due to Jay Frechette's prior obligations to join and tour with Boston-based Ten Yard Fight. After Frechette returned from a month on tour with Ten Yard Fight it was a mutual decision for him to leave Cave In and to join Ten Yard Fight full time. At this point, Dave Scrod stepped in for a short-lived tenure as interim vocalist. In 1998, most tracks from previous 7" releases and recordings were compiled to form their first full-length record for Hydra Head , Beyond Hypothermia.

Two weeks before the band was to record their second full-length, Scrod left the band, pushing guitarist Steven Brodsky to a position as vocalist. Their second album, 1999's Until Your Heart Stops, was Brodsky's first as lead vocalist. The album's release was followed by extensive touring.

Before their next full-length, Cave In began experimenting with their sound offering Creative Eclipses, a four-song EP which bridged the gap between Cave In's metal-core past and their space-rock future. Then, in 2000, they released Jupiter, receiving a good deal of press. The band was featured in Spin Magazine's "Sound Advice" section, where their new sound was described as "emo-metal Radiohead." Jupiter also caught the attention of major labels, who began courting the band after its release. The band released a final six-song EP for Hydra Head entitled Tides of Tomorrow, with an even further-expanded melodic approach, before moving on to RCA Records.

In 2003 the band released Antenna, their début for RCA. Antenna had more success than previous albums and Cave In was chosen to play the second stage on the 2003 Lollapalooza tour. After Lollapalooza, Cave In toured Europe in support of the Foo Fighters and Muse. The band cut ties with RCA Records shortly after.

Cave In returned to Hydra Head Records and released Perfect Pitch Black on September 13, 2005.

Conners has since departed from Cave In and has been replaced by drummer Ben Koller, who will balance drumming duties in Cave In as well as his primary band, Converge. According to postings on Hydra Head Records website news, Adam McGrath is listed as ex-Cave In guitarist in his new band Clouds.

In November 2006, Cave In announced that they were officially on hiatus. On the 28th of April 2009, the band announced a one-off show in Massachusetts, USA, which took place on July 19, 2009. According to The Boston Phoenix, Cave In recently regrouped to prepare a new vinyl-only EP, which will be available in July through Hydra Head Records with an additional limited color vinyl available from Vacation Records. The four song EP, Planets of Old was recorded by Adam Taylor, Alex Hartman & Johnny Northrup @ Camp St. Studios.

The first single "Retina Sees Rewind", as well as the opening track, "Cayman Tongue" are available via iTunes.

In November 2009, the band played a string of tour dates in the northeastern United States with Trap Them and Narrows as support.
