Central air conditioning within a residence is extremely important if one lives in a climate where the summers are hot. The person shopping for central air conditioning units should look for several things to make the best selection for their household.
The energy rating is an important consideration for any individual considering a central air conditioner. The central air condition systems typically advertise the rating of units available openly to help the consumers. Experts suggest that the top 25 percent of the current models available have an Energy Star rating. Air conditioning units that qualify for the rating must meet one of two criteria. If the unit is a split system, the rating must be 11.5. If the unit is a single=package model, the rating must be at least 11.0. The better the energy rating is the better potential savings for a household.
The next consideration is the noise level. The unit is usually installed close to the home and the unit can be disruptive because of where it is typically placed. The noise from the unit comes from the condensing unit that is placed just outside of the home. When in the process of searching for a unit, make sure to evaluate the sound levels from the various models available. The sound levels are measured in units called bels. The scale ranges from 0 to 13. The air conditioners that have a lower bel rating are the units that run quietly.
There are some other things to consider when look for a central air unit for the home. It is recommended that one look for a variable speed air handler. A filter check light can also be helpful to remind the user to change the filters periodically. The automatic-delay fan switch is another feature consumers should look for. The switch for the automatic-delay fan can cause the compressor to shut down at the same time the compressor is shut off.

Heat pumps have a reversing valve in the outside unit. You are hearing a balance of refrigerant pressures when the reversing is energized or de-energized.

Depending on the make and model of the air conditioner. It is probably your blower motor. There are two, possibly three items to consider. The motor, the start capacitor and the run capacitor. Some systems will have just the motor and the start capacitor. Some have just the motor and the run capacitor. Usually (not always) the capacitor will show physical signs of failure. Burned terminals, swelling or white stuff coming out of the top. Expect to pay $30 for the capacitors and several hundred for a new blower motor.

Check the filter. If in doubt filter is working , remove filter and verify A/C continues to mal-function.

Since you don't give any other information, you should start by making sure that you have electric power. Failing that, you might try checking the settings on your thermostat. You will want to be sure you have it set to cool, not heat the house and that the temperature setting on the thermostat is below the ambient room temperature.

Your air compressor is dead or the refrigerant has leaked out. Wait!!! Don't give up yet. This very same situation happened to me. I had air blowing(not cold at all) but the outside A/C compressor was not running. Check your inside unit which is either in a closet or in your attic. There is a water pan underneath it. If it is full of water, it has activated a floating shut-off switch that is wired directly to your outside Compressor. You must remove the water. the best way is with a large wet-dry vac. Then make sure the drainage pipe is properly connected and is not clogged. You can probably fix that by sucking out the drain pipe with your vacuum. Once the water is gone, your floating shut-off switch will re- activate your Air Conditioner. Kind of like the floating ball in your toilet. You may sweat a lot, but you will save yourself a service call and some big bucks. Good Luck!!!

the compressor isn't working.. either the compasitor is no good, a wire is burnt off the compressor, low refrigerant or the compressor is shot..
--- Let's not jump to conclusions. It does sound like the compressor is not running but that could be for a variety of reasons. The CAPACITOR, (poor spelling and punctuation above), could be the problem, as well as it being low or out of refrigerant.
It would be best if you called a qualified tech to take a look at it. For what you spend on utilities, it's best left to those that know what they're doing.
