Biography

Hailing from the small farming community of Hanna, Alberta, Canada, Chad Kroeger made a name for himself at the turn of the millennium as the lead singer and guitarist of the love-em-or-hate-em post-grunge rock outfit Nickelback. Born on November 15, 1974, Kroeger taught himself how to play the guitar at age 13, but got sidetracked a bit the following year when he was briefly sent to a juvenile detention facility for repeatedly breaking into his junior high school to steal money (an incident mentioned in the band's 2005 hit "Photograph"). Upon his eventual release, he finished high school and began touring around in the early '90s as the lead guitarist for a cover band in which he was performing with two of his future Nickelback bandmates: older half-brother Mike Kroeger and friend Ryan Peake. The band ultimately broke up, which is when Kroeger convinced some friends to hit a studio with him to record several songs he'd been writing on the side. Thus laying down the roots of Nickelback, these songs resulted in a seven-song demo and, later, a self-released full-length that received substantial airplay on various Canadian radio stations. Nickelback, which had relocated from Hanna to Vancouver, slowly became stars in their homeland and broke out on U.S. soil with their massive radio hit "How You Remind Me" from 2001. Kroeger was responsible for most of the band's lyrics, and especially starting with the band's third record, 2001's Silver Side Up, he began writing in a much more direct, less metaphorical manner, hitting personal topics like failed relationships and the pain and anger associated with his father being absent while growing up. As Nickelback's popularity grew throughout North America -- alongside peers 3 Doors Down, Creed, and Puddle of Mudd -- Kroeger took some separate time to indulge in various collaborations, including laying down the 2002 hit single "Hero" with Saliva frontman Josey Scott for the Spider-Man soundtrack. He also performed on Carlos Santana's album Shaman ("Why Don't You and I") and did a cover of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" with Kid Rock and Dimebag Darrell for the soundtrack to Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. Kroeger, who owns a studio in Vancouver, has also done production work for rock acts like Default, Theory of a Deadman, and Bo Bice, in addition to co-founding the Vancouver-based 604 Records in 2002. ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide

Biography

Chad Robert Turton, (also known as Chad Robert Kroeger) was born in Hanna, Alberta on November 15, 1974. Chad has an older half-brother named Mike Kroeger, who is Nickelback's bassist.[2][3] Chad is uncle of Dawson and Avalon Kroeger.[4]

Collaborations

Chad Kroeger, along with Saliva vocalist Josey Scott, Theory of a Deadman guitarist Tyler Connolly, and Our Lady Peace drummer Jeremy Taggart, performed the theme song titled "Hero" for the hit movie Spider-Man in 2002. Also in 2002, Kroeger wrote and sang on "Why Don't You & I" for Santana's Shaman. However, when Arista decided to release the song as a single in Summer 2003, Kroeger's label, Roadrunner, refused permission, citing concerns that Kroeger appearing on a "high-profile single" would compromise the excitement over Nickelback's fall 2003 release The Long Road. Kroeger is the one that recommended The Calling's Alex Band, another Arista artist, as a replacement for re-recording the single. The recording with Kroeger on vocals can easily be found on most peer-to-peer networks to this day.[5][6][7] In 2007, Chad Kroeger ended up working with Santana for a second time, when he co-wrote and recorded guitar and vocals parts for a new song meant to appear on the compilation album Ultimate Santana. The track is called "Into the Night" and was released as a single on October 2, 2007. The album Ultimate Santana was released in October. Besides working with Santana, Chad also recorded with Travis Tritt on his album The Storm where Tritt did a cover of Nickelback's "Should've Listened" track from The Long Road.

Kroeger also wrote and played guitar on Bo Bice's You're Everything.

Chad Kroeger, Eric Dill, Rune Westberg and Chris Daughtry wrote the debut single of Daughtry's new album.[8] The single, titled "No Surprise," was debuted on American Idol Wednesday, May 6, 2009. Kroeger also helped co-write another song from the album titled "Life After You." He and Brett James co-wrote Tim McGraw's 2009 single "It's a Business Doing Pleasure with You".

Chad Kroeger is featured on the new Timbaland album Shock Value 2 with the song "Tomorrow In A Bottle", it will also feature Sebastian.

Legal problems

On June 1, 2006 at around 1:30 a.m. Kroeger was pulled over by the RCMP in Surrey for speeding. A breathalyzer-type test later showed a blood alcohol level of .14, almost twice than the legal limit of .08. Kroeger's lawyer, Marvin Stern, attempted to have the results of the later test ruled inadmissible as evidence on the grounds that the request to blow the officer's face constituted an illegal search and seizure. The judge accepted that the search was illegal. Nevertheless, on March 4, 2008 the judge rejected the request to rule the evidence inadmissible.[9] On April 1, 2008, Kroeger was convicted for driving with a blood-alcohol concentration over .08. On May 1, 2008, the court sentenced him to pay a $600 fine and prohibited him from driving for one year. [10]

Equipment

Chad mostly uses Paul Reed Smith (PRS Guitars); including Singlecut, McCarty 2, and 513 models. He's been seen with Gibson and Gretsch electric guitars in his early career. He is said to have an Epiphone 7-string electric guitar as well. During Nickelback's most recent tour in promotion of their album, Dark Horse, Chad has been seen using several Gibson Les Pauls, including the Les Paul Silverburst. He has been seen playing Martin, Yamaha, Babicz, Fender, and Tacoma acoustic guitars.
