Chai Wan (English pronunciation: /ˌtʃaɪ ˈwɑːn/; Chinese: 柴灣), formerly known as Sai Wan (西灣) mistakenly[citation needed], is at east end of the urban area on Hong Kong Island and next to Shau Kei Wan in Hong Kong. It is built on land reclaimed from the bay. The land extends west near Lei Yue Mun in Heng Fa Chuen and east to Siu Sai Wan. The hills, Mount Collinsion and Pottinger Peak on the south and Mount Parker on the west, restrict further development.
The area is currently administrated by the Eastern District, with mosaic of industrial and residential area. The population was 186,505 in 2001.
Shek O Country Park is at the south of Chai Wan.
Chai Wan is not to be confused with Wan Chai, which is another area on Hong Kong Island.

History
Chai Wan was formerly known as Sai Wan (西灣). At the beginning of the 18th century, the area consisted of six villages: Dai Ping Village, Law Uk, Luk Uk, Nam Uk, Sai Village, Sing Uk.
In 1845, the British military built a fort and a barrack in Siu Sai Wan unit 80's. Sai Sau Wan become an area for new population.
In 1929, the Boy Scouts Association, Hong Kong Branch purchased land for the Chai Wan Campsite where Chai Wan Park is now situated. The land returned to Hong Kong Government for development in the early 1970s.
In 1952, the government built low-cost housing, gradually replacing rural villages in the area.
This area has total about 200-300 high rise buildings. Transportation includes subways which are called MTR(Mass Transport Railway) and bus companies such as Citybus, Kowloon Motor Bus and New World First Bus.
Culture
The Law Uk Folk Museum was formerly a village and now is the museum, a branch of the Hong Kong Museum of History.
Mount Collinsion has a range of cemeteries:
- Cape Collinsion Chinese Permanent Cemetery,
- Holy Cross Roman Catholic Cemetery,
- Sai Wan War Cemetery (where the war dead of the Second World War buried),
- Cape Collinsion Muslim Cemetery,
- Cape Collinsion Buddhist Cemetery, and
- crematorium.
Transportation
The area is served by the MTR Chai Wan Station, which is the eastern terminus of Island Line. There is another station, Heng Fa Chuen Station, at Heng Fa Chuen, the construction stated in 1970 and finalised in 80's therefore it is a way to go to the downtown of Hong Kong.

- Island Eastern Corridor along the shore, from Chai Wan to Causeway Bay.Chai Wan is its eastern terminus, ending at a large roundabout near the MTR station.
