Charity, or love, is the most important virtue because it is literally Love for God above all else for His own sake and love for oneβs neighbor as oneself for the love of God. It is the virtue that gives all other virtues meaning. We can particpate in God's love. The Vaticanβs statement on charity reminds believers that all the virtues are inspired by charity, which βbinds everything together in perfect harmonyβ (Colossians 3:14, ESV). The theology of charity (love) is based on Jesus' teaching to love God and to love others.
"If I . . . have not charity," says the Apostle, "I am nothing." Whatever my privilege, service, or even virtue, "if I . . . have not charity, I gain nothing." Charity is superior to all the virtues. It is the first of the theological virtues: "So faith, hope, charity abide, these three. But the greatest of these is charity."
