1874Out of the Hurly-Burly; or, Life in an Odd Corner. The first and best-known of the humorist's collections of sketches appears under the pseudonym "Max Adeler." Popular in the United States and England, the work would be followed by Elbow Room: A Novel Without a Plot (1876), Random Shots (1878), and The Fortunate Island and Other Stories (1882). Nearly one million copies of Clark's works sell during his lifetime.
