Chiang Mai University (CMU) is located in, and bares the name of, Thailand's second-largest city of the same name; it is the nation's oldest and largest universities. The school's approximately 26,000 students pursue studies in engineering, humanities, medicine, and social sciences among other disciplines. CMU offers degrees through nearly 90 undergraduate and about 160 postgraduate and graduate programs; the school began offering PhD programs in 2004. It caters to international students by providing instruction in English for some degrees. CMU was founded in 1964 as the country's first provincial university.
