Delphy, Christine (b. 1941). Feminist theorist. Described by Simone de Beauvoir as ‘France's most exciting theorist’, co-founder of the review Nouvelles questions féministes in 1977, she is the author of many articles, some of which are translated in Close to Home (1984). Her work is rooted in a materialist analysis of relations between men and women, stressing the economic oppression of women within the household, but rejecting both a Marxist analysis as inadequate on patriarchy, and the radical feminism of Psych et Po as insufficiently aware of economics.
