COLD
A respiratory disease characterized by breathlessness and wheezing due to chronic obstruction of the airways. It is often associated with emphysema and is common among smokers. Those with COLD find exercise difficult and many become inactive. This results in a progressive decline in cardiovascular and musculoskeletal fitness. Aerobic exercise at 70-85% predicted maximum heart rate combined with a warm-up, flexibility training, cool-down exercises gives some relief from the symptoms of COLD: it enhances mobility, increases oxygen uptake, and reduces anxiety, depression, and social isolation. However, exercise may increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmias in COLD patients.
