Biography

Chynna Phillips made her singing debut in 1989 with the group Wilson Phillips. The group was made up of Phillips, Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson, the daughters of Beach Boy Brian Wilson. Phillips began her show-business career as a model and actress before joining the trio.

Chynna Phillips was born in Los Angeles, California to singing greats John and Michelle Phillips, members of the popular '60s folk-rock band the Mamas and the Papas. She grew up amidst film greats such as Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson. Phillips and the Wilson sisters had known each other since they were infants and as children had a backyard band they called the Satellites. After graduating from high school, Phillips delved into a modeling/acting career. She was cast in John Hughes' film Some Kind of Wonderful and had a starring role in the Invisible Kid. Owen Elliot, daughter of ex-Mama Cass Elliot, had suggested uniting '60s musicians' children together to do a charity album. After receiving a less than favorable response, Chynna joined with the Wilsons in 1986 and became Wilson Phillips. Owen Elliot was invited to join also, but she declined to pursue a solo career.

The girls wrote and recorded several songs, including "Impulsive" and "Hold On," before having enough money for a record contract. Finally in 1990, with the help of producer Richard Perry, the group produced and released their first album, Wilson Phillips, featuring the hits "Hold On," "Release Me" and "You're in Love." The album sold more than ten million copies worldwide, sending the group on tours as far away as Japan. Upon returning to the United States, the group recorded Shadows and Light, which was completed in three months, but did not succeed as well as the first album.

After eight music videos and two albums, Chynna Phillips decided to pursue a solo career. She released her first solo album, Naked and Sacred, in 1995. In September of the same year, she married film actor William Baldwin. ~ Kim Summers, All Music Guide

Biography

Born in Los Angeles, California, Phillips began her career in acting. She appeared in films such as 1987's Some Kind of Wonderful, 1988's Caddyshack II, 1989's Say Anything and as the title character Roxanne Pulitzer in the 1989 television biopic Roxanne: The Prize Pulitzer.

In 1995, she returned to acting appearing as Kim MacAfee in the television movie Bye Bye Birdie. In 2004, she voiced the character of Kitty in Danny Phantom.

Music career

In the late 1980s, Phillips formed the trio Wilson Phillips with her childhood friends Carnie and Wendy Wilson. The group released their self-titled debut album in 1990. The album would go on to sell eight million copies.[1][2]The group's second album, Shadows and Light, released in 1992, was a commercial failure despite being certified platinum.[3] After the failure of that project, Phillips left the group, citing exhaustion.[4]

In 1995, Phillips released her debut solo album, Naked and Sacred, but failed to recapture the success she found with Wilson Phillips.[2]

She became a Christian in 2003.[5] In the October 15, 2007 issue of People magazine, she was said to be writing songs for a Christian album.[6] She appeared in brother-in-law Stephen Baldwin's documentary Livin It: Unusual Suspects. In 2009, Chynna teamed up with singer/songwriter Vaughan Penn to form the duo "Chynna and Vaughan". The two released their debut album, "One Reason" on September 22, 2009.[7]

Reunion

In 2004, Wilson Phillips reunited to record their third album California which featured cover tunes from West Coast singers from the 1960s and 1970s.[8]

Personal life

Phillips has been married to actor William Baldwin since 1995. The couple have three children: daughter Jameson (born 2000), son Vance (born 2002), and daughter Brooke (born 2004).[9]

Phillips is now a Born Again Christian and performing Christian music with singer songwriter Vaughan Penn.[1]

In September 2009, Chynna's half-sister Mackenzie Phillips alleged in a new memoir that she and her father had a "consensual" ten-year incestuous relationship. She stated that the relationship began after John Philips raped her while they were both under the influence of heavy narcotics.[10]. Both Genevieve Waite, John's wife at the time, and Michelle Phillips, John's second wife, told the media that they did not believe her claims[11]. However, Chynna Phillips stated on the record that she did believe Mackenzie was telling the truth.[12]
