The keyboard of a piano, harpsichord, organ etc; also a generic, non-specific for a keyboard instrument. Bach's Das wohltemperirte Clavier does not specify the clavichord, and the title is best understood as ‘The Well-tempered Clavier’ or ‘The Well-tempered Keyboard Instrument’.
