People would wear a cloth around their head when they had the
mumps because it was used to hold a ginger root salve on the
swollen areas. Ginger is a well-known herbal remedy for mumps. To
apply the ginger, a whole peeled root of fresh ginger would be
ground into a fine pulp and the pulp would be used as a salve over
the swollen areas. The salve tends to be very watery, so it would
be spread on a clean bandage or clean piece of cloth and held in
place by tying a bandana or a longer piece of cloth around the
head.
