Charles-Louis De Secondant, Baron De Montesquieu, was born to a
wealthy, noble family. As was the custom at that time, he spent his
early years in the home of his poor wet nurse. When he was seven,
his mother passed away and he was sent away to school at the
College of Juilly, remaining there for eleven years. His father
died in 1713 and he was a ward of his uncle, the Baron De
Montesquieu, until his passing in 1716, when he willed him both his
title as well as his fortune.
