The city of Cologne is located on the west coast of Germany on the Rhine River. It is the fourth largest city in the country. This city was completely devastated during World War II and rebuilt through the 1950’s. There were very few buildings that were restored, most were built from the ground up after the war.
Some of the main types of industry are insurance, media, and furniture. Cologne hosts an annual Furniture Market that draws in buyers from all over the world. Some companies based in Cologne are Lufthansa, the German Airline and Kolsch Beer.
There are quite a few remarkable churches in Cologne. Some that you should see include The Church of the Assumption, Holy Trinity Church, and St. Severin Church. Cologne Cathedral is the most well known.
The city of Cologne has many museums. The Museum Ludwig is an art museum that has an original Picasso collection of paintings. There are over twenty five other museums to keep you busy while on vacation in Colgone.
Take some time and tour the Farina Frangrance Museum, the German Sports and Olympic Museum, and the Chocolate Museum.
Festivals are big in Cologne. Perhaps the biggest festival is the Cologne Carnival. It is the largest festival in all of europe. People come from all over to attend and have fun. Cologne Lights and Art Cologne also draw in lots of tourists.
There are lots of sporting events to keep you busy. If you like horse racing, take a trip over to Cologne-Weidenpesch Racecourse. You will also find the German Ice Hockey team called the Cologne Sharks. If you just want to hike or stroll through the city, consider a trek by the Rhine. You will find people walking, running, biking, and just out enjoying the day. Most of the parks by the Rhine have beer gardens so you never have to go thirsty.
Like any major european city, Cologne has a diverse collection of restaurants and cafes. To experience the local culture and cuisine make a stop at one of the lcoal beer gardens. It is an experience not to be missed. Some of the most popular restaurants include Gaststatte Bei Oma Kleinmann, they have extraordinary local schnitzel. Das Klein Steakhaus, Mongo’s, Peter’s Brauhaus, and Alcazar.
Cologne has a few family friend attractions. The Cologne Zoo is a great place to bring the kids. If they like waterparks then take them to Aqualand. Aqualand has waterslides, pools, and jacuzzis. Phantasialand is an amusement park in Bruhl, just outside of Cologne. It is open from April through October each year.
