A colossus is a gigantic statue. The fist people who build such statues were the Egyptians. The most famous of these are the Colossi of Memnon, two gigantic statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III.The Greeks also built such statues; the most famous one was the Colossus of Rhodes. The Romans also built this kind of statues, such as the Colossus of Nero, the Colossus of Constantine and the Colossus of Barletta

Colossi is the plural of collosus, which typically refers to a statue of great size or proportion or, alternately, to an enormous and powerful person.

For example, the Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone figures of the Egyptian Pharaoh Amenhotep III, that are part of the Theban necropolis near the Nile river.

Colossal, which shares the same word origin, has several meanings: 1) something resembling a colossus; 2) something extraordinarily large, powerful and impressive (a colossal rock formation); or 3) to an exceptional or astonishing degree (as in, a colossal failure).
