It has a large presence in Indiana, Oklahoma, and Texas; the company's Eagle Tribune Publishing Company subsidiary publishes the Eagle-Tribune in Massachusetts. In addition to publishing, the company runs companion Web sites for many of its papers and it owns four TV stations. Ralph Martin, formerly with the newspaper operations of Thomson Reuters (then known as Thomson Corporation), founded CNHI in 1997. The company is backed by state pension manager Retirement Systems of Alabama.

Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc.(CNHI) is a publisher of newspapers and advertising-related publications throughout the eastern part of the United States. The company was formed in 1997, and is based in Birmingham, Alabama. The company is financed by the Retired Alabama Teachers Association.

As of 2006, CNHI owns 90 daily newspapers and more than 200 non-daily newspapers in 22 states. George Wakefield is CNHI chairman; Donna Barrett is president and CEO.
