n. 1. a space within a larger space, separated from the rest by partitions, such as in an aircraft, railroad car, wallet, or desk.

2. a watertight division of a ship: the aft cargo compartment.

  • fluid c. — that liquid part of the body excluded by cell membranes. Includes intravascular and intercellular compartments.
  • c. syndrome — muscles which are contained in an aponeurotic sheath may be subjected to serious ischemia as a result of increase in the size of the muscle as a result of vigorous muscular activity.
