(kən-tĭn'yū-əm) pronunciation
n., pl., -tin·u·a (-tĭn'yū-ə), or -tin·u·ums.
  1. A continuous extent, succession, or whole, no part of which can be distinguished from neighboring parts except by arbitrary division.
  2. Mathematics.
    1. A set having the same number of points as all the real numbers in an interval.
    2. The set of all real numbers.

[Latin, neuter of continuus, continuous. See continue.]

The linear continuum is the set of ‘points’ on a line. The great achievement of Cantorian set theory was to provide a purely mathematical treatment of this set, without invoking undefined notions like nearness or distance.
