Gardener's Dictionary: controlled-release fertilizer

A synthetic fertilizer, usually encased in gelatin capsules, that releases its nutrients over a specific period of time, much the same as a controlled-release drug releases its medicine. Also called timed-release fertilizer. See also slow-release fertilizer.
