Chain door locks are a great addition to any home security system. These locks give you the visibility to identify the person who is knocking at your door, without letting him or her completely into your home or giving visual access to the interior of your house.

Types of chain door locks

The first type of chain door lock is the standard and most common version. One piece is an open slat to put on one side of door with a screw that has a short chain and bolt-like piece on the end to put on the other side of the door. The bolt at the end of the chain fits into the slat allowing you to open the door without fully removing the lock. The second type of chain door lock has the same basic set up but with the addition of an extra key added in. This chain lock is opened from the inside or the outside of the house with a small key. This is great for when there is more than one person living in the home or for couples that work varying shifts.

If you decide that you want to install a chain door lock with a key, make extra copies of the key just in case you lose one. Ideal lock locations

The most typical lock locations are at eye or chest level, but placing your lock at the very top or bottom of the door is also ideal so as not to alert a possible intruder that you have special locks in place. You can also use more than one chain lock for added protection. Before installing your lock, use a ruler and mark the door with a pencil to ensure the lock and chain are level and can latch into each other.

Keep yourself and your family safe and sound by investing in a chain door lock. Extra security can only help.
