Investment Dictionary: Correspondent

The name given to a bank, broker, dealer, or financial institution that acts on behalf of another financial institution with limited or restricted access to the financial markets where a transaction must occur.

Investopedia Says:
Commonly done by smaller financial corporations that don't necessarily have the capital to enter into foreign markets and set up new operations. This is a cheaper method of providing international services to clients through agreements and partnerships.

Banking Dictionary: Correspondent

1. bank that holds deposits for other banks and performs services, such as check clearing. The deposit balance is a form of payment for services. Many community banks clear checks drawn on out-of-town banks through Reserve Accounts at a larger bank. Correspondent banks also buy participations in loans exceeding the Legal Lending Limit of a smaller bank, called the Respondent and give these banks access to financial markets, such as the foreign exchange market or financial futures market, that are ordinarily beyond the reach of smaller financial institutions.

2. Mortgage banker or broker who services mortgage loans for a fee, collecting principal and interest payments plus real estate taxes.

This entry contains information applicable to United States law only.

A bank, securities firm, or other financial institution that regularly renders services for another in an area or market to which the other party lacks direct access. A bank that functions as an agent for another bank and carries a deposit balance for a bank in another city.

Securities firms may have correspondents in foreign countries or on exchanges — organizations that provide facilities for convening purchasers and sellers of securities — of which the firms are not members.

The term correspondent is distinct from corespondent — a person summoned to respond to litigation, together with another person, particularly, a paramour in a divorce action based on adultery.

Wikipedia: correspondent

A correspondent or on-the-scene reporter is a journalist or commentator who contributes reports to a newspaper, or radio or television news, from a remote, often distant, location. A foreign correspondent is in a foreign country. The term correspondent refers to the original practice of filing news reports via postal letter.

Reporter vs. correspondent

A correspondent generally includes some of his/her own perspective on the news. For example, a correspondent is expected to provide considerable context to the events being chronicled. A reporter, on the other hand, offers largely fact-based reporting.

In Britain the term 'correspondent' usually refers to someone with a specific specialist area, such as health correspondent. A 'reporter' is usually someone without such expertise who is allocated stories by the newsdesk on any story in the news.

War correspondent

Main article: War correspondent

A war correspondent covers stories first-hand from a war zone. It is perhaps the most dangerous form of journalism.

Foreign bureau

A foreign bureau is an office set up to support a news gathering operation in a foreign country.

On-the-scene TV news

In TV news, a "live on-the-scene" reporter reports from the field during a "live shot". This became an extremely popular format with the advent of Eyewitness News.

A recent cost-saving measure is for local tv news to dispense with out-of-town reporters and replace them with syndicated correspondents, usually supplied by a centralized news reporting agency. The producers of the show schedule time with the correspondent, who then appears "live" to file a report and chat with the hosts. The reporter will go do a number of similar reports for other stations. Many viewers may be unaware that the reporter does not work directly for the news show.[1] This is also a popular way to report the weather. For example, AccuWeather doesn't just supply data, they also supply on-air meteorologists from television studios at their headquarters. [2] [3]
