Effect used in television production that is created by a device that moves credits or other graphic matter horizontally or vertically past the camera so that the information appears to crawl across or up the television screen. The device is actually a continuous strip of paper that is set between two rollers so that the paper can be moved past the camera either by hand or by mechanical means. The lettering used for the credits or other graphics is usually done in white on a black background so that the information can be superimposed over another picture.
