The Southern Cross in astronomy, the most celebrated of the constellations of the far south. The four principal bright stars of the group, α, γ, β and δ form the figure of a cross, giving the constellation its name (see illustration). The brightest star in Crux is Alpha Crucis at the foot of the cross, which has received the artificial name Acrux. This is a navigational star. See also Constellation; Cygnus.

CRUX is a lightweight, i686-optimized Linux distribution targeted at experienced Linux users. The distribution is delivered by a tar.gz-based package system with BSD-style initscripts. CRUX also has a ports system to install and upgrade applications.

Although the word "Crux" in Latin means "cross", the choice of the name "CRUX" itself has no meaning. Per Lidén created it for "sounding cool", using an ending "-X" to evocate Linux and Unix.[2]
