cytochrome oxidase

An oxidizing enzyme containing iron and a porphyrin, found in mitochondria and important in cell respiration as an agent of electron transfer from certain cytochrome molecules to oxygen molecules.

An enzyme that catalyses the final stage of aerobic metabolism when oxygen combines with hydrogen ions to form water. The amount of cytochrome oxidase is commonly used in exercise physiology as a measure of the capacity of the respiratory chain to generate energy.
