Biography

Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul started forming up Damageplan in early 2003, soon after the demise of their previous band, thrash metal heroes Pantera. The brothers began working on tracks at Dime's Dallas home studio, unsure of exactly what they'd do with the material, but determined to banish the bad taste of Pantera's awkward breakup. Ex-Halford and -Diesel Machine guitarist (and full-time Dime pal) Pat Lachman heard the demos and expressed interest in singing for the project. While he'd never served as a frontman, Lachman's performances over the raw material were strong enough to land him the vocalist position. The lineup was completed with the addition of local bassist Bob Kakaha, who was immediately dubbed Bob Zilla for his monstrous tone, and the quartet began hashing out the new material under the working title of New Found Power. By October 2003 they'd decided on Damageplan, with New Found Power becoming the name of their Elektra debut. The album dropped in February 2004 to considerable buzz, mostly from Pantera's existing fan base. Longtime fans weren't disappointed as New Found Power did echo Dime and Vinnie's previous work. But it moved in new directions too, exploring more melodic post-grunge avenues and tinging its sound with slight elements of nu-metal's electronic throb. New Found Power did well through the summer, buoyed by a solid round of dates from the band. But tragedy struck on December 8, 2004 at the Alrosa Village rock club in Columbus, Ohio, when Dimebag Darrell and three other men were murdered in a bizarre and unfortunate altercation with a disgruntled fan. A man appeared on stage with a gun just after the beginning of Damageplan's set and, after allegedly making comments laying blame for Pantera's breakup on Dimebag, shot and killed the guitarist at point blank range. The assailant, later identified as 25-year old Marysville, Ohio resident Nathan Gale, killed three other men before he was killed by local police, including a concertgoer, club employee, and Damageplan bodyguard Jeff "Mayhem" Thompson. Memorials after the shootings remembered the victims and wondered at Gale's motives, while the future of Damageplan was unclear as its surviving members grieved. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

Damageplan (originally New Found Power) was a US-American heavy metal band, showcasing the groove metal sound that was demonstrated by guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and drummer Vinnie Paul while playing in Pantera, most notably on the Vulgar Display of Power album.

History

Formed by Dime and Vinnie after Pantera disbanded, they were joined by ex-Halford guitarist Pat Lachman on vocals and ex-Jerry Cantrell guitarist Shawn Matthews[1] on bass. Following the recording of the album, Matthews departed and was immediately replaced by Bob Zilla by the Abbott brothers. Their debut album, New Found Power, was released in the United States on February 10, 2004.

New Found Power reached #34 on the Billboard charts, with the band gaining popularity within the metal community almost instantly. They toured throughout 2004 promoting the album, with continuing success.

Murder of Dimebag Darrell

On December 8, 2004, "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, and 3 others were murdered when a gunman, 25-year-old Nathan Gale, took to the stage and began shooting during the band's show at the Alrosa Villa, a Columbus, Ohio, USA nightclub. Columbus police officer James Niggemeyer soon arrived at the scene and shot the attacker, killing him. Damageplan was on a world tour at the time, and according to guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell, a new album probably would have been released sometime in 2005. The band was playing the song "Breathing New Life" when Gale opened fire. The events of the evening are chronicled in the book A Vulgar Display Of Power: Courage and Carnage at the Alrosa Villa, foreword written by Officer Niggemeyer. (For more details about the incident, see Wikipedia's entry on Dimebag Darrell.)

Post-Dimebag murder actions

The band has been dissolved since Darrell's murder. However, www.blabbermouth.net has reported that members of Damageplan may release their second and final album with Dimebag's final recordings later in 2005. As of October 2007, it is unknown how complete these recordings are or when they will be released. It is speculated that the recordings are demo recordings, as Damageplan were touring in support of New Found Power at the time of the shooting.

Hellyeah

On August 11, 2006, a new project involving Vinnie Paul (in addition to members of Mudvayne and Nothingface) surfaced. The band's name is Hellyeah and their debut album was released on April 10, 2007, on Epic Records. Just over a week later, Bob Zilla joined the band as their new bassist, after Jerry Montano was fired from the band after an incident at 'The Clubhouse' where Montano became intoxicated and increasingly violent towards his bandmates.[2]
